Patient Case
Alexandra had been bitten by a dog which left her with a large scar across her upper face. This made her very emotional as the scar was very prominent and she was unable to hide it. The scar was 7cm long, 3.5cm wide and 1.5mm deep requiring 5 stitches. We began her treatments just a few months after the incident as CO2 laser treatment is often considered most effective when treating new scars.
This is because of several factors related to the scar’s healing process and the laser’s mechanisms of action:
-
-
- New scars are often more prone to hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening), CO2 laser treatment can target pigmented areas and help to even out the skin tone, reducing the scar’s visibility.
-
-
-
- CO2 laser therapy can also help improve the texture of a scar by smoothing out irregularities and reducing the raised or indented appearance that often characterises new scars.
-
-
-
- When applied to new scars, CO2 laser treatment can help remodel the collagen in the scar tissue more effectively; which can lead to a better cosmetic outcome

Notes from first treatment:
“Amazing results following the 1st treatment session. Client Alex is so happy with the results so far. The anger and redness to the scar has settled.”
PATIENT CONCERN: 10/10
Notes from last treatment:
“Results still continue to improve the scar, the colour resembles more of a skin colour rather than red and raised. Amazing results. However, there is still some hypertrophic scarring, which is reducing”.

The British Medical Journal has reported in “Hospital episode data for England revealed an upward trend in the number of attendances for dog related injuries in the past 15 years. There has been an 88% increase in attendances, from 4699 in 2007 to 8819 in 2021-22.”
Whilst we, as medical aesthetic clinics, do not offer the immediate care for traumatic incidents, we can offer treatments that support the long term health and wellness of the patient, through effective scar healing therapy with the Alma Hybrid Co2 Laser, which can also be combined with topical and injectable HA, as well as Polynucleotides to support healing.
Alex has now benefited from 5 CO2 Laser treatments using the Alma Hybrid, combined with SKINUA scar cream, SPF, exsomes, hyaluronic acid and a steroid injection in her most recent visit.

“There are cases that arise, profoundly affecting the mental and emotional well-being of clinicians, and this was undeniably one of them. As a nurse, my primary instinct is to provide assistance and care. The presence of a prominent facial scar, which you and others encounter daily, can have a significant emotional impact, especially when it has resulted from a traumatic incident. I found myself in a position to offer help, and that’s precisely what I did.”
