So, what is an exosome?
Think of your cells as tiny factories. As part of their everyday function, cells release small packages into their surroundings. These packages are called exosomes.
Each exosome is incredibly small — far smaller than a cell itself — and it carries a shipment of proteins, lipids, and genetic material. Its job is essentially communication: exosomes travel from one cell to another, delivering instructions and information that influence how the receiving cell behaves.
In other words, exosomes are part of how the body’s cells talk to each other. That’s the whole concept, stripped of the jargon.
Why aesthetic medicine is paying attention
For years, treatments in this space have focused on triggering the skin’s own repair and renewal processes — think microneedling, laser, or bio-stimulators. Exosomes have entered the conversation because they represent a different angle on the same goal: supporting cell-to-cell communication as part of that process.
That’s why you’re seeing exosomes discussed less as a standalone treatment and more as something added alongside what clinics already do.
How exosomes differ from things you already know
If you’ve worked with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or polynucleotides, the exosome conversation might feel familiar — and it’s worth understanding how all three relate.
The sourcing question is one worth paying attention to as you evaluate products in this category — it varies more than most people realise, and it affects everything from consistency to handling to how a product is positioned.
It’s also a legal question, not just a technical one. In the UK, human-derived exosomes are not legally available for use. If you’re evaluating exosome products for your clinic, sourcing isn’t a background detail — it’s one of the first things to check.
